Nambour is the old working heart of the Sunshine Coast hinterland: a sugar town for a century, with the Moreton Central Sugar Mill crushing cane from 1897 until it closed in 2003, and still the end of the suburban railway line from Brisbane, 104 kilometres from Central station. Today the town has 12,145 residents (2021 census), two hospitals and a showground that has hosted the district show since 1909.
