Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersThe Sunshine Coast stretches along about 60 km of coastline north of Brisbane, with several hubs rather than one centre. Here is how to get your flowers to the right address.
The Sunshine Coast is a peri-urban region in South East Queensland, about 100 km north of central Brisbane on the Coral Sea coastline. Its urban area spans roughly 60 km of coast and hinterland from Pelican Waters to Tewantin, and in June 2021 it had an estimated urban population of 398,840. Because it is a string of towns rather than one compact city, the suburb in your delivery address matters.
There are several coastal hubs: Caloundra, Kawana Waters, Maroochydore and Noosa Heads. Mooloolaba, Alexandra Headland and Coolum Beach are popular beach suburbs. Inland, Nambour and Maleny are the main commercial centres of the hinterland, and Buderim is known for its Ginger Factory.
Since 2014 the district has been split into two local government areas, the Sunshine Coast Region and the Shire of Noosa. If your recipient lives in Noosa, say so clearly in the address, and add the suburb, street number and a mobile number. The Sunshine Coast Airport is at Marcoola, about 10 km north of Maroochydore, which is handy to know if the person you are sending to has just flown in.
Unbroken beaches run for 17 km from Sunshine Beach near Noosa to Coolum Beach, and another stretch runs from Buddina past Caloundra to Pelican Waters. Noosa Main Beach, Alexandra Headland, Mooloolaba and Coolum Beach are nationally recognised surfing beaches. Inland, the Glass House Mountains were first sighted by James Cook in 1770, and the region has more individual national parks than any other part of Queensland.
For flowers, that coastal setting suggests bright, sun-tolerant blooms for beach homes and soft foliage for hinterland cottages. The Eumundi Markets, Buderim Ginger Factory and the Big Pineapple are some of the attractions that bring about 3.2 million visitors a year, so many addresses are holiday rentals. If your recipient is staying in one, check the check-in times and ask the host about parcels.
The Sunshine Coast has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot but moderated compared with other places on similar latitudes, winters keep warm days with cooler nights, and there is no dry season, so rain is generally high. Sea temperatures at Mooloolaba average 27.1 degrees Celsius in February.
In the humid months, flowers last better in a shaded spot with fresh water, and delicate stems can wilt faster in a warm car. Ask the recipient to unwrap the bouquet, trim the stems and place them in a clean vase as soon as it arrives.
The major public hospital is Sunshine Coast University Hospital at Birtinya, a suburb of Kawana Waters. It opened in 2017, now has 728 beds and is run by the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service as part of Queensland Health. Nambour General Hospital remains the coast's secondary hospital, and private hospitals include Sunshine Coast Private Hospital at Buderim, Caloundra Private Hospital, Selangor Hospital at Nambour and Kawana Private Hospital.
Ring the ward before ordering, because some units, including intensive care, do not accept flowers. Give the patient's full name and ward, and include the name of the hospital campus in the address, since several are close together at Birtinya. Keep the arrangement small enough to fit a bedside locker.
Queensland does not use daylight saving, so the recipient's time zone stays the same all year. Same-day delivery on the coast is possible when you order before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on a Saturday, in the recipient's time zone. Sundays are not delivered, so for a Sunday birthday, plan for Friday or Saturday.
Mother's Day is on the second Sunday of May, Father's Day on the first Sunday of September. Spring runs from September to November, which is a good time for light, fresh flowers.
For a funeral, ask the family or funeral director for the venue and time, and whether donations are preferred to flowers. If the service is in a hinterland town such as Maleny or Nambour, allow more delivery time than for a coastal address. Add a short, handwritten-style message and your full name on the card.
Did you know? The Sunshine Coast has three UNESCO biosphere reserves side by side, the only place in the world with that distinction.
