Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersAn Albury florist makes up the bouquet and delivers it Monday to Saturday on both sides of the Murray. Order by 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Albury time, for same-day delivery.
Albury is the New South Wales half of a border city. The 2021 census counted 53,677 people on the Albury side and 97,793 in Albury-Wodonga as a whole, 554 km from Sydney and 326 km from Melbourne, on the Murray River at 165 metres. People searching for an Albury florist from either capital are usually sending to Lavington, Thurgoona or across the river to Wodonga, and one local florist covers all of it. We take the order and the card; the florist makes the bouquet up by hand that morning and drives it out.
Central Albury and East, North, South and West Albury are the core of the run. Lavington, with 13,073 residents the largest suburb and the only one with its own postcode, 2641, Thurgoona (11,028 people) around the Charles Sturt University campus, Glenroy on the slopes of Nail Can Hill, Springdale Heights, Hamilton Valley and Norris Park are all covered, as are Table Top, Wirlinga, Splitters Creek, Ettamogah and Lake Hume Village further out, where a rural address goes later in the day. Wodonga, 37,839 people on the Victorian bank, is delivered too. For a student at Charles Sturt in Thurgoona or a soldier at Latchford or Gaza Ridge Barracks in Wodonga, give the recipient's mobile number; drivers cannot go past the gate or into a residence block. Albury's house numbers follow a system introduced in 1920 that counts outward from the corner of Dean and Olive Streets, so three-digit numbers close to the centre are normal; copy the address exactly as the recipient gives it.
Order before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on a Saturday, Albury time, and the bouquet is delivered the same day, Monday to Saturday. There is no Sunday delivery. New South Wales and Victoria change their clocks on the same dates, so Albury and Wodonga always show the same time and an order from Sydney or Melbourne needs no conversion. From Brisbane, where there is no daylight saving, the 2pm cut-off is 1pm from October to April and 2pm in winter. From Adelaide it is 1.30pm all year; from Perth, 11am in summer and noon in winter. A later order is delivered the next working day, or you can name the day yourself.
Albury Wodonga Health runs both public hospitals: Albury Hospital on Borella Road, East Albury, and Wodonga Hospital on Vermont Street, Wodonga. Visiting hours are 11am to 1pm and 5pm to 8pm, with a rest period between, so a bouquet delivered during the day waits at the nurses' station until it can go in. Ring the ward before you order: intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers, and give the patient's full name and the ward. If the patient may be discharged soon, the home address is safer.
AlburyCity has run the city's cemeteries and crematorium since 1951. Glenmorus Memorial Gardens and Crematorium at 54 Glenmorus Street, Glenroy, reached from the western end of Union Road, has the crematorium and a chapel seating 100 to 120; tributes left on graves there must be under 300 mm and placed in the holders provided. The older Waugh Road Cemetery at the corner of Waugh Road and Fallon Street, North Albury, dates from 1925 and still takes some burials. Service tributes, whether a wreath, casket spray or sheaf, are ordered two or three days ahead through the funeral director or a florist near the chapel; delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so give the family's home as a second address.
The Albury Show is on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October 2026 at the showground on Mate Street, North Albury, and the Albury Gold Cup is the district's big autumn race day, with a record crowd of more than 18,600 in 2005. Mother's Day is Sunday 9 May 2027, the busiest day of the florist's year; with no Sunday delivery the flowers arrive on Saturday 8 May and the cut-off is 10am, so order early in the week. Father's Day is 5 September 2027. Valentine's Day on 14 February comes in an Albury summer where January maximums average 30.9 degrees, so roses should go to a workplace or a home where someone can put them in water straight away. On Anzac Day, 25 April, the First World War memorial on Monument Hill looks over the city, and the day belongs to rosemary and wreaths rather than bouquets.
Albury has a humid subtropical climate with a Mediterranean streak: hot summers, cool damp winters, about 699 mm of rain a year and July minimums near 4 degrees, so winter mornings often start white with frost. Cold nights are good for cut flowers; a bouquet lasts longer in an Albury winter than in a Sydney one. Spring brings peonies, tulips, ranunculus and sunflowers; summer is dahlias, gerberas and chrysanthemums; autumn, when the Albury Botanic Gardens laid out in 1877 turn colour, is dahlia, chrysanthemum and protea season; winter means tulips, ranunculus and chrysanthemums. Roses are available all year, and a seasonal bouquet lets the florist use what came in freshest.
Hand-tied bouquets start at AUD 75; roses by the dozen and larger arrangements cost more. Delivery to either side of the river is priced at checkout, and the card is part of the order.
Did you know? Did you know? Albury railway station, opened in 1882, has a 455-metre platform that was the longest in Australia when it was built, and it is still covered for its entire length.
