Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersA Swan Hill florist makes up the bouquet and delivers it Monday to Saturday on both sides of the Murray. Order by 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Victorian time, for same-day delivery.
Swan Hill got its name in 1836 from the explorer Thomas Mitchell, kept awake by swans on the Murray; Burke and Wills camped here from 6 to 10 September 1860, the railway arrived in 1890 and the town has been a city since 1965. Today 11,508 people (2021 census) live here, 338 km north-west of Melbourne, among irrigated vineyards and stone fruit orchards. A search for a flower shop in Swan Hill from Melbourne or interstate ends with us arranging a local florist to make up the bouquet and deliver it by hand.
The town itself, Tyntynder South and the orchard country around Woorinen and Woorinen South, 10 km out, are on the daily run. So is Murray Downs, which is across the bridge in New South Wales but is really a suburb of Swan Hill with its golf and country club; the border makes no difference to the delivery or to the clock. Lake Boga, 17 km south-east, and Nyah and Nyah West, 27 km north-west, are covered later in the run, so an order placed in the morning has the best chance of arriving the same afternoon. For a farm or an orchard block, give the property name and a mobile number, and say whether to leave the flowers at the house or the packing shed. Robinvale and Kerang are served by their own florists.
Order before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on a Saturday, Victorian time, and the flowers go out the same day, Monday to Saturday. There is no Sunday delivery. Victoria and New South Wales keep the same clock, so Murray Downs follows the same cut-off. From Brisbane, where there is no daylight saving, the 2pm deadline is 1pm from October to April and 2pm the rest of the year. From Adelaide it is 1.30pm all year, from Perth 11am in summer and noon in winter. Miss the cut-off and the bouquet goes out on the next working day, or on the date you nominate.
Swan Hill District Health is at 48 Splatt Street, Swan Hill, with a 24-hour emergency department, a maternity unit, two operating theatres and a six-chair dialysis unit. Ring the ward before you order: intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers, and give the patient's full name and the ward. The health service also runs Logan Lodge aged care in Swan Hill and Jacaranda Lodge in Nyah West, where a resident's room number and a mobile number for a family member help the driver.
Swan Hill Memorial Park on Coronation Avenue is the town's cemetery, with lawn sections and graves that go back to the 1890s. Service tributes such as a wreath, casket spray or sheaf are ordered two or three days ahead through the funeral director or a florist near the chapel; delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so give the family's home as a second address. A sympathy bouquet to the home can be sent straight away or weeks later.
The Swan Hill District Show is on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 October 2026 at the showgrounds on McCallum Street, entered from Pritchard Street. The Pioneer Settlement at 125 Monash Drive, Australia's first open-air museum when it opened in 1966, with the paddle steamer Pyap still cruising from the Horseshoe Bend wharf, is the town's year-round attraction and a favourite setting for anniversaries. Mother's Day is Sunday 9 May 2027: there is no Sunday delivery, so the flowers go out on Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off. Father's Day is 5 September 2027. Valentine's Day on 14 February lands in a Swan Hill summer with January maximums averaging 33 degrees, so roses should be delivered where someone can put them in water straight away. Anzac Day on 25 April is for rosemary and wreaths rather than bouquets.
Swan Hill has a cold semi-arid climate: hot, sunny summers, about 310 mm of rain a year and July nights around 3.6 degrees with frost. In summer the florist works with heat-tolerant stems such as chrysanthemums, gerberas and dahlias; autumn brings dahlias, chrysanthemums and proteas; winter is tulips, ranunculus and chrysanthemums; spring means peonies, tulips, ranunculus and sunflowers, at the time the stone fruit orchards around Woorinen are in blossom. Roses are available all year. A seasonal bouquet lets the florist choose the freshest flowers that morning.
Bouquets start at AUD 75, the delivery fee is added at checkout and the card is included.
Did you know? Did you know? Burke and Wills camped at Swan Hill from 6 to 10 September 1860, and a Moreton Bay fig on Curlewis Street is said to have been planted by the expedition.
