Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersMade up by a Rockhampton florist and delivered by hand Monday to Saturday, north and south of the river. Same-day delivery for orders in before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Queensland time.
Rockhampton sits on the Fitzroy River just north of the Tropic of Capricorn, about 630 km north-west of Brisbane, a city of 79,300 people (2021 census) that calls itself the beef capital of Australia and looks the part, with bull statues on the roundabouts and the biggest cattle saleyards in the southern hemisphere down the road at Gracemere. It is also a city of wide Victorian streets, a heritage botanic garden and a river that divides town into a north and a south side joined by three bridges. Order flowers here and a Rockhampton florist arranges them and delivers them the same day.
South of the river the run covers Rockhampton City, Allenstown, Wandal, The Range, Depot Hill, West Rockhampton and Port Curtis. North of it, in what locals still call North Rocky, the florist delivers to Berserker, Frenchville, Norman Gardens, Park Avenue, Koongal, Kawana, Lakes Creek and Parkhurst, where the city's newer estates are. Gracemere, 9 km west and home to some 12,000 people, is on the run as well. Mount Morgan, 40 km to the south-west, and Yeppoon, 40 km east on the Capricorn Coast, are delivered less often and can take an extra day, so order early for those. CQUniversity's main campus is at Norman Gardens; for a student there, or anyone in a unit block with a security door, add a mobile number so the driver can get in. For a cattle property give the station name and the turn-off, and say whether flowers can be left at the homestead.
Same-day delivery runs Monday to Saturday for orders received before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on a Saturday, Rockhampton time. There is no Sunday delivery. Queensland does not change its clocks, so between the first Sunday in October and the first Sunday in April the southern states are an hour ahead of Rockhampton. If you are ordering from Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra or Hobart in that period you actually have more time than you think: the 2pm Rockhampton cut-off is 3pm where you are. In winter the clocks agree. From Perth, two hours behind all year, the deadline is noon; from Adelaide it is 1.30pm in winter and 2.30pm during daylight saving; from Darwin, 1.30pm all year.
The three hospitals sit within a few blocks of each other on The Range. Rockhampton Hospital, the public hospital with about 300 beds and the largest in Central Queensland, is at 2 Canning Street, The Range 4700; it treats patients from Gladstone, the Capricorn Coast and Emerald as well as the city. Mater Private Hospital Rockhampton is on Ward Street and Hillcrest Private Hospital on Talford Street, both also in The Range. Before ordering, telephone the ward: intensive care and some other wards take no fresh flowers, and maternity often asks for something compact. Give us the patient's full name and the ward name or number. If the patient has been flown in from the coast or the mines for a short stay, the home address is usually the better destination.
Every three years Rockhampton hosts Beef Australia, a week-long national cattle exposition; the next one runs from 2 to 8 May 2027, when the city's motels and florists are both at full stretch, so order ahead if your date falls that week. The Rockhampton Show is a three-day event in June, the Rockhampton Cultural Festival is in August and Carols by Candlelight closes the year in December. Mother's Day is Sunday 9 May 2027, right after Beef Week, and is delivered on Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off; Father's Day is Sunday 5 September 2027. Valentine's Day on 14 February lands in the hottest, wettest part of the Rocky year, so roses should go to a workplace or home where they can be put in water at once. On Anzac Day, 25 April, the custom is rosemary and a wreath, not a bouquet.
Rockhampton's climate is humid subtropical shading into tropical: summers are hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, the record stands at 45.3 degrees, and winters are mild, dry and pleasantly cool at night. Annual rainfall is around 800 mm, most of it between December and March. In the hot months a florist here reaches for stems that last in heat, including lilies, gerberas, alstroemeria, orchids, heliconias and tropical foliage, and keeps roses for cooler days or air-conditioned rooms. The dry winter from June to August is the best season for cut flowers in Central Queensland: proteas, leucadendron, carnations, iris and native bunches all keep for a week or more. Spring brings ranunculus, stock and roses in volume, and autumn chrysanthemums and the first tulips. A seasonal bouquet lets the florist pick what is freshest on the day.
Most Rockhampton funerals end at North Rockhampton Cemetery in Norman Gardens, at the Rockhampton Crematorium on Richardson Road nearby, or at Rockhampton Memorial Gardens in Lakes Creek. The old South Rockhampton Cemetery at 113-171 Upper Dawson Road in Allenstown, opened in the 1860s, closed to new burials in 1993 and is heritage-listed, so a graveside tribute there is rare. Casket sprays, wreaths and sheaves should be ordered two to three days ahead through the funeral director or a florist near the chapel. Because delivery to the service itself can never be guaranteed, give the family's home as a second address, and consider sending a bouquet to the house a week or two later instead.
Hand-tied bouquets begin at AUD 75; roses by the dozen, large arrangements and native bunches cost more. The delivery fee for the Rockhampton address is shown and added at checkout, and a card with your message is included.
Did you know? Did you know? Rockhampton Botanic Gardens at 100 Spencer Street, The Range, were gazetted in 1869 and still include a small zoo, a feature most Australian botanic gardens gave up long ago.
