Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersGet-well, birthday and sympathy flowers made up by a florist in Hervey Bay and delivered Monday to Saturday. Order before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Queensland time, for same-day delivery.
Hervey Bay is where humpback whales stop to rest on their way south, where the barge leaves for K'gari, and where a large share of Queensland's retirees have chosen to live: the median age here is 48, ten years above the national figure. That shapes the flowers people send. Get-well and sympathy bouquets make up a bigger share here than in a city of students, and birthday flowers are often ordered by children and grandchildren a long way south. We pass every order to a florist in Hervey Bay who hand-ties the bouquet that morning and drives it to the door.
The two hospitals sit a few hundred metres apart in Urraween. Hervey Bay Hospital, the public hospital, is at 141-169 Urraween Road. St Stephen's Hospital, the private hospital, is at 1 Medical Place, Urraween, and the Fraser Coast Hospice is nearby at 222 Urraween Road. In all three cases ring the ward or the nurses' station first: intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers, and the hospice has its own preferences. Give the patient's full name and the ward on the order. If discharge is a day or two away, the home address is the better choice.
The bayside strip is the core of the run: Point Vernon, Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan along the Esplanade, then Urraween, Kawungan, Wondunna and Eli Waters directly behind them, and Nikenbah and Booral on the southern edge. Dundowran, Craignish and Takura to the west are mostly acreage and are delivered later in the day. On a rural block, add the property name, the colour of the gate or the letterbox number, and a mobile number the driver can ring from the road.
Hervey Bay has one of the highest concentrations of retirement living in regional Queensland: Fraser Shores alone runs to around 441 homes, and new over-50s communities are still being built. Most villages have a gatehouse or reception with limited hours and unit numbers that do not follow the street. Write the village name, the villa or unit number and the resident's phone number on the order, and tell us whether reception may accept the flowers if nobody is home. For an aged-care home, send the flowers in a vase or arrangement rather than a loose bunch, and address them to the resident, care of the facility, with the wing or room if you know it.
Queensland does not have daylight saving. From the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, Hervey Bay is one hour behind New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania. The same-day cut-off is 2pm on weekdays and 10am on Saturdays in Hervey Bay time, so a daughter in Melbourne ordering at 2.30pm in January is already past it, while in July she has until 2pm her time. If you are south of the border in summer, you have until 3pm your time to make the 2pm Hervey Bay cut-off. From Adelaide the difference is half an hour in winter and an hour and a half in summer.
Whale watching runs from July through to October, with the season opened by the Blessing of the Fleet at Urangan Harbour on Friday 10 July 2026 and the Hervey Bay Whale Festival on the weekend of 29-30 August 2026, when the Paddle Out for Whales ends with a flower release on the water. Order a few days ahead for that weekend. Mother's Day is 9 May 2027, the second Sunday in May; with no Sunday delivery, flowers go out on Saturday 8 May and the cut-off is 10am. Father's Day is 5 September 2027. Valentine's Day on 14 February lands in the humid height of summer, when a bouquet should be delivered somewhere it will be put in water straight away. On Anzac Day, 25 April, the local custom is rosemary on the lapel and a wreath at the dawn service, not a bouquet.
Hervey Bay's climate is warm humid subtropical: average maximums run from 21.8 degrees in July to 30.3 in January, with most of the rain falling in summer. Winter and spring are the kindest months for cut flowers, when roses, lilies, chrysanthemums, stock and snapdragons last longest and the whale-season crowds arrive. In summer, florists lean on blooms that cope with heat and humidity: orchids, anthuriums, gerberas, gingers and Australian natives such as protea, banksia and kangaroo paw, with gardenias and frangipani from local gardens. Peonies are a short November treat flown up from the south. A seasonal bouquet lets the florist choose what is freshest that morning.
Hervey Bay's cemetery is Polson Cemetery on Corser Street, Point Vernon, run by Fraser Coast Regional Council; its lawn sections allow fresh flowers in up to three standard vases per grave, with free vases at dispensing points. Funeral tributes for a chapel service are arranged through the funeral director or a florist two to three days ahead; delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so give the family's home as a second address. A bouquet to the home in the weeks afterwards is often the more appreciated gesture.
Hand-tied bouquets from a Hervey Bay florist start at AUD 75. The delivery fee for the suburb is added at checkout, and a card with your message is included.
Did you know? Did you know? In October 2019 Hervey Bay was named the world's first Whale Heritage Site, and the whale-watching season runs from July to October.
