Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersA florist in Bowen makes up the bouquet and delivers it Monday to Saturday. Order before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Queensland time, and it arrives the same day.
Bowen sits on a peninsula between Townsville and Mackay, 201 km south-east of Townsville and 1,165 km up the coast from Brisbane, with eight beaches wrapped around the town and the Whitsundays beginning just offshore. It was founded as Port Denison in April 1861 and renamed after Queensland's first governor, and 11,205 people lived in the locality at the 2021 census. The district grows tomatoes, capsicums and rockmelons through the dry season, ships coal from Abbot Point north of town and, in 2007, stood in for 1940s Darwin when Baz Luhrmann filmed Australia here. A florist in Bowen makes up your bouquet and delivers it by hand.
The town centre around Herbert Street, the beach suburbs along the peninsula (Queens Beach, Kings Beach, Rose Bay, Horseshoe Bay, Greys Bay, Murrays Bay and the Front Beach) and the residential streets in between are all delivered. Merinda, 10 km west on the highway, and Heronvale to the south are included, though an out-of-town property may be reached later in the afternoon. If the recipient is staying in a caravan park, holiday unit or workers' accommodation, include a mobile number and the site or unit number; a driver cannot leave flowers at a gate without a name to ask for. Collinsville and Proserpine are outside the Bowen run.
Order before 2pm Monday to Friday or before 10am on Saturday, Bowen time, and the flowers go out that day. Sundays are not a delivery day, so a Sunday birthday is delivered on the Saturday. Queensland keeps standard time all year, which works in your favour if you order from the south between October and April: 2pm in Bowen is 3pm in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart, so you have an extra hour. From Adelaide the cut-off is 2.30pm in summer and 1.30pm in winter; from Perth it is noon all year; from Darwin 1.30pm. Orders placed after the cut-off are delivered the next working day or on the date you choose.
Bowen Hospital is at 61-65 Gregory Street, Bowen 4805, run by Mackay Hospital and Health Service. Ring the ward before you order: intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers, and give the patient's full name and the ward so the delivery is not held at reception. Patients who need more complex care are moved to Proserpine Hospital at 26-32 Taylor Street, Proserpine, or to Mackay Base Hospital at 475 Bridge Road, Mackay; if a transfer is likely, the family home is the safer address.
Bowen Cemetery, at John and West Streets, is the oldest in the Whitsunday region: its first recorded burial was on 20 November 1861, and it has lawn and memorial sections, a palm memorial garden and columbarium walls. The older Flemington Road cemetery is closed to new burials and listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. Funeral tributes such as wreaths and casket sprays are best ordered two or three days ahead through the funeral director or a local florist; delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so give the family's home as a second address. St Mary's Catholic Church on Sinclair Street and Bowen Uniting Church at 37 Kennedy Street host many of the town's services.
The Bowen Show is on Tuesday 23 June 2026, a one-day show with produce, livestock, rides and arena events. Mango season runs from spring into summer: the Kensington Pride, which accounts for more than 80 per cent of Australia's commercial mango crop, was first grown here in the 1880s, and the Big Mango on the highway has marked the town since 2002. For flowers, Mother's Day is Sunday 9 May 2027, delivered on Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off; Valentine's Day on 14 February falls in the wet season, so a morning delivery to a workplace keeps roses out of the heat; Anzac Day on 25 April is for rosemary and wreaths rather than bouquets; Father's Day is 5 September 2027.
Bowen has a tropical savannah climate: daytime averages of 28 to 29 degrees, nights around 19 to 20, roughly 900 mm of rain, most of it between December and April, and a long dry season from May to November. In the dry, cooler months almost anything travels well, including roses, lilies, chrysanthemums and the natives such as proteas and leucadendron that come into season in winter. From December to March choose orchids, anthuriums, tropical foliage, sunflowers or gerberas, which cope with heat and humidity far better than tulips or peonies, and ask for the flowers to be delivered where someone can put them in water straight away.
Bouquets start at AUD 75. The delivery fee is added at checkout; the card and your message are included.
Did you know? Did you know? Bowen stood in for 1940s Darwin when Baz Luhrmann filmed Australia here in 2007, after the Queensland Government put up half a million dollars to bring the production to town.
