Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersA florist in Sunbury makes up the bouquet and delivers it Monday to Saturday. Order before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Melbourne time, and it goes out the same day.
Sunbury is 38 kilometres north-west of Melbourne's CBD and only 17 kilometres from Melbourne Airport, but it still feels like a country town: a main street, a cemetery trust run by volunteers, and Rupertswood, the mansion where Lady Clarke burnt a bail, presented the ashes to the English captain Ivo Bligh and started the Ashes. Around 39,000 people live here, many in new estates that did not exist a decade ago, which is exactly why we work with a florist based in Sunbury rather than one driving out from the city.
The most common question we get about Sunbury is whether flowers can go to Sunbury Day Hospital at 7 Macedon Street. They can, but as the name says it is a day hospital, run by Western Health for day surgery, dialysis and chemotherapy; patients go home the same evening, so flowers sent there may miss them. Deliver to the home instead, timed for the day after the procedure. Someone from Sunbury admitted overnight is usually at Sunshine Hospital, 176 Furlong Road, St Albans, or the Northern Hospital, 185 Cooper Street, Epping. For either, ring the ward first: intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers. Give the patient's full name and the ward on the order.
The run covers Sunbury's older centre and every estate around it: Jacksons Hill, a 193-hectare parkland suburb with more than 3,000 residents; Rupertswood and Goonawarra; Kismet Park; Canterbury Hills; and the new streets of Redstone in Sunbury South. Diggers Rest and Bulla are included, and so are Wildwood, Clarkefield, Riddells Creek and Gisborne in the Macedon Ranges, though an address on acreage out there may be delivered later in the afternoon. For a rural block, give the property name and a mobile number so the driver can call from the gate; for a townhouse complex, add the unit number.
Same-day delivery is Monday to Saturday: order before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on a Saturday, Victorian time, and the florist delivers that day. Later orders go out the next working day or on the date you pick. There is no Sunday delivery. Victoria shares its clock with New South Wales, the ACT and Tasmania, including daylight saving, so relatives in Sydney face the same cut-off. Family ordering from Brisbane or Perth should remember that Sunbury runs ahead of them for part or all of the year: 2pm in Sunbury is 1pm in Brisbane during daylight saving and 11am in Perth.
Sunbury's claim to fame is the Sunbury Pop Festival, held outside the town from 1972 to 1975 with Queen, Deep Purple and Billy Thorpe on the bill; the town marked its fiftieth anniversary with the Sunbury '24 concert. In the florist's year the fixed points are Mother's Day on 9 May 2027 (the second Sunday in May, delivered Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off because there is no Sunday run), Father's Day on 5 September 2027 and Valentine's Day on 14 February, which falls in the hottest stretch of the Melbourne summer; choose a workplace or a home where someone will get the roses into water. On Anzac Day, 25 April, the custom is rosemary on the lapel and a wreath laid at the service rather than a bouquet.
Sunbury averages a maximum of 19.9 degrees and a minimum of 9.6, with 586 millimetres of rain a year, a temperate climate with cold nights in winter. Late winter brings daffodils and the first tulips; spring (September to November) is tulips, ranunculus, stock, sweet pea and the November peony window; summer (December to February) is roses, lilies, dahlias and sunflowers; autumn (March to May) means chrysanthemums and dahlias for Mother's Day; winter is natives, hellebores and poppies. A seasonal bouquet is the best value at any time of year.
Sunbury Public Cemetery is at 88 Shields Street, governed by the volunteer Sunbury Cemetery Trust and run day to day by Remembrance Parks Central Victoria. Tributes for a service (casket spray, wreath, sheaf) should be ordered two or three days ahead through the funeral director or a florist; delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so give the family's home as a second address. A sympathy bouquet to the house can be sent on the day you hear or a few weeks later.
Bouquets from the Sunbury florist start at AUD 75. The delivery fee for the address is added at checkout and a card with your message is included.
