Larkspur – White – Guide & Order

White delphiniums bring pale, church-candle spires to borders and tall arrangements. Find out how they are grown and why they must be handled with care.

White spires for height

White delphiniums carry dense spikes of flowers along stems that can reach well over a metre. Each bloom has a small cluster of petals in the middle, often called the bee, which can be white, black or yellow. Pure white spires are sought-after for weddings, where they add height behind roses and peonies.

Garden care

  • Choose a sheltered, sunny site with deep, fertile soil.
  • Dig in compost before planting in spring.
  • Tie stems to a stake while they are young.
  • After the first flush, cut spent spikes to the base for a lighter second bloom.

Climate limits

Delphiniums love cool summers. In Melbourne, Hobart and Canberra, they can do very well, while Perth, Brisbane and Sydney gardeners have less success. In the tropics, florists import cut stems from cooler growing regions.

Handle with caution

All parts of delphinium contain toxic alkaloids. Wear gloves when cutting, and wash hands afterwards. Keep vases out of reach of children and animals; the ASPCA lists delphinium as toxic to dogs, cats and horses. After swallowing any plant part, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.

Delphinium flowers can drop their petals suddenly when exposed to ethylene, the gas released by ripening fruit, so keep the vase well away from the fruit bowl. A cool room slows the process.

Cut flower life

Stems usually last five to eight days in clean water.
