Daffodil – White – Guide & Ordering

White daffodils include paperwhites and pale-cupped cultivars and carry a soft, cool look. See which types suit Australian winters and why the sap matters in a vase.

White daffodils fall into a few distinct groups. Some have pure white petals around a pale cream or yellow cup, others have an orange rim, and the tazetta types, including the paperwhites (Narcissus papyraceus), carry clusters of small, strongly scented flowers on each stem.

Which white for which climate

  • Paperwhites: the best choice for mild areas such as Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and the warmer parts of Adelaide, since they need little winter cold.
  • Large-cupped and trumpet whites, such as 'Mount Hood': better in cool regions with a proper winter.
  • Poet's types, with a white petal ring and a small red-edged eye: late flowering and sweetly scented.

Planting for winter white

Bulbs go into the ground between March and May. Use well-drained soil, full sun or light shade, and plant clusters of at least ten so the display reads clearly. White flowers look best against dark foliage, evergreen hedges or a wall.

Forcing in water or pebbles

Paperwhites can be grown in pebbles and water indoors in winter, with roots just touching the water. They flower in four to six weeks. Their perfume is strong, and not everyone enjoys it in a closed room.

Slimy sap and the vase

Daffodil stems release a slimy sap that harms other flowers. Stand freshly cut stems in a separate container for several hours, then arrange them without recutting.

Bulbs to keep away from pets

Daffodil bulbs contain lycorine and other alkaloids, and the ASPCA lists the plant as toxic to dogs, cats and horses. Bulbs should be stored out of reach, and any pet that has chewed one needs a vet.
