Coral bells – Red - A vibrant perennial for the garden

A red coral bell can mean red flowers or red leaves, and they are not the same plant. Here is how to get the strongest red and how to use it in pots and borders.

When people ask for red coral bells, they usually want one of two things: sprays of small scarlet bells or foliage in burgundy, wine and ruby shades. The red-flowered kind comes from Heuchera sanguinea, the name nodding to its blood-red blooms. Many deep red leaves, by contrast, come from hybrids with other species.

Bringing out the red

  • Give red-leaved forms some morning sun. Too much shade turns them green.
  • Protect them from hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the edges.
  • Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy.
  • Cooler weather often brings deeper tones, so autumn and winter can be the best colour.

Pots and beds

A red heuchera in a glazed pot is an easy way to add colour to a shady verandah. In a bed, plant it among silver-grey foliage or lime greens for contrast. Group several of the same kind for a bold sweep.

In Australia

Heuchera dislike humid heat, so they are most reliable in Melbourne, Tasmania, Canberra, the hills of Adelaide and Sydney's cooler upper suburbs. In the tropics, treat them as short-lived pot plants.

Spring feed and tidy

Feed with slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Cut off old flower stalks, and remove old leaves close to the crown.

Easy on the pets

Under the ASPCA listing coral bells are non-toxic for all three of the usual household animals. That is a relief if a curious pup likes to dig in the pots.
