Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersFresh flowers delivered across Brisbane by a local florist, Monday to Saturday. Order before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Brisbane time, for same-day delivery.
In Brisbane the jacarandas turn the streets purple in October, summer arrives with afternoon thunderstorms and winter is mild enough for a picnic at South Bank. That climate shapes how flowers are sent here: order in the morning, choose stems that cope with warmth, and make sure someone is home to get them into water. Whether the bouquet is bound for a Queenslander in Paddington, a riverside apartment in Kangaroo Point, a new baby at the Mater or a colleague in a Fortitude Valley office, a Brisbane florist makes it up on the day and delivers it by hand.
Delivery covers the City of Brisbane and the neighbouring councils that make up Greater Brisbane. Close to the CBD: Spring Hill, Fortitude Valley, New Farm, Teneriffe, Kangaroo Point, South Brisbane, West End, Woolloongabba, Paddington and Milton. On the northside: Chermside, Aspley, Nundah, Stafford, Kedron and Albany Creek. On the southside: Mount Gravatt, Sunnybank, Holland Park, Carindale and Coorparoo. West: Toowong, Indooroopilly, Kenmore and The Gap. Bayside: Wynnum, Manly and Carina. Further out, Logan, Ipswich, Redcliffe and the Redlands are served as well, though an outer address may be delivered later in the run. In the apartment towers of the CBD, South Brisbane and the Valley the driver needs a unit number and a mobile number to be let in; for a Queenslander on stumps behind a locked gate, say whether there is a shaded spot where flowers can safely be left.
Same-day delivery is available Monday to Saturday when the order is in before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on a Saturday, Brisbane time. There is no Sunday delivery. Queensland does not observe daylight saving, so from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April Brisbane runs an hour behind Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart. Ordering from those cities in summer you actually gain an hour: 3pm your time is still 2pm in Brisbane. From Perth, two hours behind Queensland all year, the deadline is noon Perth time. Brisbane also has a public holiday of its own on Royal Queensland Show Day, the Ekka Wednesday, so plan a delivery that week for the day before or after.
The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital is on the corner of Butterfield Street and Bowen Bridge Road, Herston 4029. The Princess Alexandra Hospital is at 199 Ipswich Road, Woolloongabba 4102. The Mater hospitals, including Mater Hospital Brisbane and the Mater Mothers', are on Raymond Terrace, South Brisbane 4101. The RBWH publishes a list of wards where flowers and potted plants are not allowed for patient safety: intensive care, burns, haematology, infectious diseases and, unless the ward says otherwise, neurosurgery. The same caution applies across the city: phone the ward first, give the patient's full name and the ward, and if the patient is about to go home, deliver to the house.
The Ekka, the Royal Queensland Show, runs at the Brisbane Showgrounds in Bowen Hills from 7 to 15 August 2027, with the People's Day holiday on Wednesday 11 August. Brisbane Festival follows from 3 to 25 September 2027, opening with Riverfire over the river on Saturday 4 September, which is also the Saturday on which Father's Day flowers go out, since Father's Day is Sunday 5 September 2027 and nothing is delivered on Sundays. Mother's Day, the biggest flower day of the year, is 9 May 2027; bouquets are delivered on Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off. Valentine's Day, 14 February, falls in the wettest, stormiest part of the Brisbane year, so give a mobile number and an address where someone will be in. On Anzac Day, 25 April, the custom is rosemary and a wreath rather than a bouquet.
Brisbane has a humid subtropical climate: about 1,000 millimetres of rain a year, most of it in summer storms between November and March, and mean temperatures from 16 to 27 degrees. Summer heat is hard on soft blooms, which is why Brisbane florists lean on orchids, anthuriums, gerberas and lisianthus from December to February. Autumn brings chrysanthemums, proteas, leucadendron and roses; the dry, sunny winter is arguably the best season for flowers here, with stock, ranunculus, tulips, daffodils and orchids all in; and spring means sweet pea, ranunculus and lisianthus, with jacarandas overhead in October and a short run of peonies in November and December.
Brisbane City Council runs the city's cemeteries. Mount Gravatt Cemetery and Crematorium, at 620 Mains Road, Nathan 4111, opened in 1918, added its crematorium in 1999 and is one of the few council cemeteries still open to new burials. Toowong Cemetery, on the corner of Frederick Street and Mt Coot-tha Road, Toowong 4066, opened in 1875, covers 44 hectares and is Queensland's largest and heritage listed. Casket sprays, wreaths and sheaves for a service are organised two or three days ahead through the funeral director or a florist near the chapel. Delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so give the family's home as a second address, and remember that a bouquet sent to the house a fortnight later is rarely the wrong call.
Bouquets start from AUD 75; roses by the dozen, larger arrangements and native bunches cost more. The delivery charge is shown at checkout and a card with your message is part of every order.
Did you know? Did you know? Brisbane's jacarandas flower in October, and because Queensland keeps standard time all year the city is an hour behind Sydney and Melbourne every summer.
