Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersA florist in Nowra makes up your order and delivers it Monday to Saturday on both sides of the Shoalhaven River. Order before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on a Saturday for same-day delivery.
Nowra is the working centre of the Shoalhaven: the council seat, the hospital town, the place with the Navy base and the showground, sitting on the south bank of the Shoalhaven River 160 km south of Sydney. About 22,500 people live in Nowra itself and more than 100,000 across the wider City of Shoalhaven, from Berry down to the Jervis Bay villages. A flower delivery to Nowra is done by a florist in the town, not trucked down the highway from Wollongong, which is why same-day delivery is realistic and why the bouquet still looks fresh on day five.
The town and its twin, Bomaderry, face each other across the river and are joined by the Nowra Bridge, so a delivery to Bomaderry is part of the ordinary Nowra run. So are North Nowra and Bangalee on the northern bank, West Nowra, South Nowra and its industrial estate, Worrigee, Terara on the river flats and Cambewarra at the foot of the mountain. Further out, we cover Berry and Shoalhaven Heads to the north, Greenwell Point and Culburra Beach at the river mouth, and the Jervis Bay side at Callala Bay, Huskisson, Vincentia and Sanctuary Point, though those addresses go out later in the day than Nowra and Bomaderry. Many addresses around Nowra are rural: for a farm at Terara, Cambewarra or Nowra Hill, give the property name, the road and a mobile number, and tell us if the gate is locked or the dogs are loose.
Nowra is a Navy town. HMAS Albatross, the Navy's largest operational establishment and its only air station, is about 10 km south-west of the town on Albatross Road at Nowra Hill. Flowers cannot be driven onto the base: a delivery for a sailor or a civilian staff member is left at the front gate, so give the recipient's full name, division or unit and a mobile number, and order in the morning so there is time for the gate to call them. The Fleet Air Arm Museum beside the base has a public entrance and is simpler. For the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre, Nowra Showground or a nursing home, name the person at the venue who will receive the flowers.
Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital is at 2 Scenic Drive, on the ridge above the river in Nowra, with an intensive care unit, a children's ward, a maternity unit and the regional Cancer Care Centre. Nowra Private Hospital is at 9 Weeroona Place, off the Princes Highway. David Berry Hospital, the rehabilitation hospital at 85 Tannery Road in Berry, takes longer-stay patients from the district. Ring the ward first: intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers, and oncology often prefers flowers without pollen. Give the patient's full name and the ward on the order. If discharge is a day away, the home address is the better bet, because hospital flowers do not always follow the patient out.
Same-day delivery runs Monday to Saturday for orders placed before 2pm on a weekday or before 10am on a Saturday, New South Wales time. Later orders are delivered the next working day, or on any date you choose. There is no Sunday delivery, so a Sunday birthday or anniversary is delivered on the Saturday. Hand-tied bouquets start at around AUD 75; a dozen roses, a larger arrangement or a native bunch costs more. The delivery fee is shown and added at checkout, and a card with your message is included.
The Nowra Show fills the showground in early February each year (5 to 7 February in 2026), with the Navy from Albatross among the exhibitors, and the Shoalhaven River Festival brings the town to the riverbank in late October. Those weekends are busy for florists in town, so order a day ahead for any address near the showground or the river. Mother's Day is Sunday 9 May 2027: there is no Sunday delivery, so flowers are delivered on Saturday 8 May and the cut-off is 10am that morning. Father's Day is Sunday 5 September 2027, also delivered on the Saturday. Valentine's Day, 14 February, usually lands within a week of the show and in warm weather, so send roses somewhere they will be put straight into water. On Anzac Day, 25 April, the custom is rosemary on the lapel and a wreath at the memorial, not a bouquet.
Nowra has a humid subtropical climate softened by the sea: January highs average about 28 degrees, July highs about 17, and the year brings a little over 1,000 mm of rain, so there is no dead season for a florist. Spring (September to November) means ranunculus, sweet pea, snapdragons and the first roses. Summer (December to February) brings lilies, gerberas, orchids and carnations, plus peonies for a few weeks in November and December. Autumn (March to May) is chrysanthemum and protea time, which is why Mother's Day bouquets in Nowra so often carry both. Winter (June to August) is stock, iris, daffodils and native bunches of banksia and leucadendron. Ask for the florist's choice and you get what was freshest at the market that morning.
Shoalhaven Memorial Gardens and Lawn Cemetery at 349 Worrigee Road, Worrigee, is the district's main burial ground and the site of the council-run crematorium; the older Nowra General Cemetery is on Kalandar Street in town, and Berry General Cemetery is on Kangaroo Valley Road. Tributes for a service, whether a wreath, a sheaf or a casket spray, should be ordered two to three days ahead and addressed to the chapel or church with the family name and service time. Delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so give the family's home as a second address. A sympathy bouquet to the house can go the day you hear, or a fortnight later when the house has gone quiet, and is often more welcome then.
