Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersHand-tied by a Southern Highlands florist and delivered Monday to Saturday. Order before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Sydney time, and the bouquet arrives the same day.
Bowral plants tulips by the thousand every spring, so a bouquet has a high bar to clear here. The town sits 690 metres up in the Southern Highlands, 132 kilometres south-west of Sydney, with 10,764 residents at the 2021 census and more than a third of them over 64, which makes anniversaries, get-well wishes and flowers to a retirement village a big part of a local florist's week. Whatever the address, a garden in Burradoo, a new estate in East Bowral or a ward at Bowral and District Hospital, we pass the order to a Highlands florist who makes it up fresh that morning.
The core run covers Bowral itself, East Bowral and Burradoo, then Mittagong six kilometres up the road with Welby, Braemar, Renwick and Colo Vale around it, and Moss Vale and historic Berrima about nine kilometres away. Robertson and Bundanoon are further out and may be delivered later in the day. Highlands addresses are often acreage with a name instead of a number, a long drive and a gate: give the property name, the nearest cross street and a mobile number. For a retirement village or aged-care home, add the resident's unit or room number so the flowers do not wait at reception.
Same-day delivery is available Monday to Saturday when the order is placed before 2pm on a weekday or before 10am on Saturday, New South Wales time. Nothing goes out on Sundays. Bowral keeps daylight saving with Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, so from those cities the clock is the same. If you order from Brisbane between October and April you have an hour less: the 2pm Bowral cut-off is 1pm in Queensland. From Perth it is 11am in summer and midday in winter, from Adelaide 1:30pm all year. Anything later is delivered the next working day or on the date you pick.
Bowral and District Hospital, founded in 1889 and rebuilt in a 50-million-dollar upgrade finished in 2021, is at 97-103 Bowral Street, with the main entrance now on the Mona Road side. Southern Highlands Private Hospital is a few doors along at 93-95 Bowral Street. Ring the ward before you order, because intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers; the high dependency unit and the maternity ward have their own rules. Give the patient's full name and the ward, and if discharge is a day or two away, the home address in Bowral is the safer choice.
Tulip Time has run at Corbett Gardens in the centre of Bowral since 1958; the 2026 festival ran from 11 September to 5 October. It is the busiest fortnight of the year for local florists, so order a day or two ahead if the bouquet is for a Tulip Time weekend. The Bong Bong Picnic Races, first run in 1886, draw about 5,000 people each November. Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May, is 9 May 2027 and falls in the middle of the autumn colour; it is delivered on Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off. Father's Day is 5 September 2027, in the last cold week before the tulips. Valentine's Day on 14 February is mild up here, so roses travel well. On Anzac Day, 25 April, the Highlands wear rosemary and lay wreaths at the dawn service rather than carrying bouquets.
Bowral has an oceanic climate with 932 millimetres of rain a year, a mean maximum of only 18.7 degrees and frosts through winter; the records run from 40 degrees to minus 11.2. The cold is why bulbs do so well here. Spring (September to November) means tulips, sweet pea, lilac, freesia and the first peonies in November. Summer (December to February) brings roses, delphinium, alstroemeria and hydrangea from local gardens. Autumn (March to May) is dahlia, chrysanthemum and the first proteas, with the town's oaks and elms turning at the same time. Winter (June to August) is daffodils, ranunculus, hellebores and natives such as banksia and leucadendron. Ask for a seasonal bouquet and the florist uses what is freshest that morning.
Most Bowral burials take place at Bowral General Cemetery, and services are held in the town's churches and funeral chapels. Casket sprays, wreaths and sheaves should be ordered two or three days ahead through the funeral director or a florist; delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so give the family's home as a second address. A sympathy bouquet to the house can follow a few weeks later, when the visitors have gone.
Hand-tied bouquets from a Highlands florist start at AUD 75. Larger arrangements, roses by the dozen and native bunches cost more, the delivery fee for the suburb is added at checkout, and a card with your message is included.
Did you know? Did you know? Bowral has held Tulip Time at Corbett Gardens every spring since 1958, and its winter frosts have taken the thermometer down to minus 11.2 degrees.
