The natural colour
White is the wild colour of Anemone nemorosa. The petal-like segments are white on top and often flushed pink or purple underneath, so a closed flower can look pinker than an open one. Rare forms are blue or double, but the plain white wildflower is the one that spreads over woodland floors.
White anemones, three different plants
Anyone searching for a white anemone in Australia is probably after one of three plants.
- Wood anemone is a small, spring-flowering woodland perennial that likes cold winters.
- The florist's anemone, Anemone coronaria, has larger flowers with a dark centre and is sold as a cut flower in cooler months.
- Japanese anemone has tall stems of white flowers from late summer into autumn and is a reliable garden plant in many Australian districts.
If you want to try wood anemone
It needs shade, leaf mould and cool ground. Southern Tasmania, the high country of Victoria and cold tablelands offer the best chance. In warmer cities, the plant is likely to fade within a year or two. Place it under deciduous trees so that it enjoys winter light and summer shade.
Take care when handling
Buttercup-family plants are mildly toxic, so it is wise to wear gloves around this one. In a suspected case of poisoning in a person, call the Poisons Information Line on 13 11 26. A vet can help with animals.
