Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersDelivered Monday to Saturday by a local florist to Port Augusta, Port Augusta West and Stirling North. Order by 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, South Australian time, for same-day delivery.
Port Augusta sits at the very top of Spencer Gulf, 310 km by road north of Adelaide, where the road north to Darwin, the road west across the Nullarbor and the railways carrying the Ghan and the Indian Pacific all meet, which is why it calls itself the crossroads of Australia. The city and its surrounding localities had 13,515 residents at the 2021 census: the centre and older suburbs on the eastern shore, Port Augusta West across the bridge on the Eyre Peninsula side (4,046 people), Stirling North 8 km east (2,793) and the seaside homes at Commissariat Point, Blanche Harbor and Miranda. It is a service town for the mines and stations of the interior, a gateway to the Flinders Ranges, and since 2020 a solar-power town where coal was once burned. A local florist makes up your bouquet and delivers it by hand.
Delivery covers the city centre, the residential streets east of the gulf, Port Augusta West out to the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden on the Stuart Highway, and Stirling North on the Quorn road. The seaside settlements further down the gulf and station properties beyond town may be delivered later in the day or the next morning; give a mobile number and clear directions. For a mine camp, a transport depot or the railway yards, name the site and the person on shift, because a driver cannot hand flowers to a gatehouse without a name.
Order before 2pm on a weekday or before 10am on Saturday, South Australian time, and the flowers go out that day, Monday to Saturday. Sundays are not a delivery day. South Australia runs half an hour behind the eastern states and uses daylight saving, so the arithmetic is the same from Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart all year: 2pm in Port Augusta is 2.30pm there. From Brisbane it is 2.30pm in winter but 1.30pm in summer, because Queensland does not change its clocks; from Darwin 2pm in winter and 1pm in summer; from Perth 12.30pm in winter and 11.30am in summer. Later orders are delivered the next working day or on the date you choose.
Port Augusta Hospital and Regional Health Service is at 71 Hospital Road, Port Augusta 5700. It provides acute care, an accident and emergency service and aged care beds, and patients who need a specialist are often transferred to a larger hospital, sometimes at short notice. Ring the ward before ordering: intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers. Give the patient's full name and the ward, and if a transfer or discharge is in the air, send the bouquet to the home.
Wreaths, sheaves and casket sprays for a funeral in Port Augusta are ordered two or three days ahead through the funeral director or a local florist, who knows which chapel and which cemetery the service is using. We cannot guarantee delivery to the service itself, so always add the family's home as a second address. Many mourners at a Port Augusta funeral have driven hours from stations and mining towns, and a bouquet to the family home in the weeks afterwards is a thoughtful follow-up.
Valentine's Day on 14 February arrives in the hottest part of the year, when the average high is 33 to 34 degrees, so send roses to a workplace in the morning or ask for them to go straight into a cool room. Anzac Day on 25 April is the day for rosemary and wreaths, not bouquets. Mother's Day is Sunday 9 May 2027: flowers are delivered on Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off. Father's Day is Sunday 5 September 2027. The Pichi Richi Railway's heritage trains to Quorn and the Wadlata Outback Centre draw visitors through the cooler months, which is also the easiest season for sending flowers.
This is a hot desert climate: a January average high of 34.1 degrees, a July high of 18, a record of 50.0 degrees and just 221.6 mm of rain a year. From November to March, avoid tulips, peonies and other soft stems; orchids, anthuriums, carnations, alstroemeria, chrysanthemums and hardy native stems such as kangaroo paw and leucadendron last far longer, and an arrangement in a vase or with its own water reservoir travels better than a hand-tied bunch. From April to October the mild, dry days suit almost anything, including roses, stock, lilies, dahlias and proteas.
Bouquets start at AUD 75. The delivery fee is added at checkout; the card and message are included at no charge.
Did you know? Did you know? Port Augusta's weather station has recorded a top of 50.0 degrees, while the city gets only about 222 mm of rain in an average year.
