Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersFlowers for Mount Isa are made up in town, not trucked from the coast. Order before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Queensland time, and a Mount Isa florist delivers the same day, Monday to Saturday.
Mount Isa is a long way from anywhere: 1,826 kilometres north-west of Brisbane, 904 kilometres west of Townsville, and the service centre for north-west Queensland. Its 18,317 people (2021 census) live beside one of the largest mining operations in the country, under a 270-metre lead-smelter stack that can be seen from every street. Cut flowers have to be flown or trucked in, so the florists here work hard to keep a fresh range, and a bouquet delivered on the day in Mount Isa is a small logistical feat. We pass your order to a florist in town who makes it up and delivers it by hand.
The Leichhardt River splits Mount Isa in two. Almost everybody lives on the townside, east of the river, and delivery covers all of it: the centre and Miles End around the civic centre and railway station, Parkside, Pioneer, Happy Valley, Sunset, Townview, Soldiers Hill, Mornington by the hospital, Healy, Menzies around Buchanan Park, Ryan, Winston and The Gap. The mineside, west of the river, is the Glencore lease and not a delivery address; for someone working there, send to their home or their accommodation. Workers' accommodation, camps and hospital quarters all need a mobile number on the order so the driver can hand the flowers over in person rather than leave them in the heat. Lake Moondarra, 19 kilometres north, and the stations further out are beyond the normal run.
Same-day delivery is Monday to Saturday: order by 2pm on a weekday or 10am on a Saturday, Mount Isa time. Nothing is delivered on a Sunday. Queensland keeps standard time all year, so from October to April an order placed in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra or Hobart has until 3pm local time to meet the 2pm Mount Isa deadline, and Adelaide has until 2.30pm; in winter the eastern states match. Darwin is half an hour behind Queensland, so a Territory order has until 1.30pm. From Perth, two hours behind, the cut-off is noon. Later orders are delivered the next working day.
Mount Isa Hospital, still called the Base Hospital by locals, is at 30 Camooweal Street in Mornington. The general and maternity wards encourage visits between 10am and 1pm and 3pm and 8pm. Ring the ward before you order: intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers, and the heat means a compact arrangement in its own water travels better than a loose bunch. Put the patient's full name and the ward on the order. Patients are often flown to Townsville for specialist care, so check the person is still in Mount Isa before the order goes in.
The Mount Isa Rodeo has run every August since 1959 and is the largest annual rodeo in the southern hemisphere, filling Buchanan Park and the Mardi Gras street parade with visitors; accommodation and florists are both stretched that week, so order early. The Mount Isa Agricultural Show has its public holiday on Friday 19 June 2026. Mother's Day falls on 9 May 2027, a Sunday, so flowers are delivered on Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off, and it is the busiest flower day of the year even out here. Father's Day is 5 September 2027. Valentine's Day on 14 February lands in the wet season, when daytime temperatures are still in the high thirties, so roses should go to a home or office with air-conditioning rather than a worksite. On Anzac Day, 25 April, Mount Isa wears rosemary and lays wreaths; a bouquet is not the custom.
Mount Isa has a hot semi-arid climate: January days average 36.6 degrees, July nights 8.7, and only 467 millimetres of rain falls in a year, most of it between December and March. The florist's buckets reflect that. Hardy stems such as chrysanthemums, carnations, lilies, orchids and Australian natives (proteas, banksia, kangaroo paw, leucadendron) outlast soft summer flowers, and from May to September, when the nights are cool and the air dry, roses and seasonal mixed bouquets last well. Ask for seasonal stems and the florist chooses what has arrived freshest that week.
Mount Isa's burials are at the Sunset Lawn Cemetery on the northern edge of town, with the cemetery car park on Sunset Drive. Casket sprays, wreaths and sheaves for a funeral are ordered through the funeral director or a florist at least two days ahead, because stock may need to be flown in; delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so give the family's home as a second address. A bouquet to the house in the weeks afterwards is always welcome in a town where many families have relatives thousands of kilometres away.
Hand-tied bouquets start at around AUD 75; the delivery fee is added at checkout and your card message is included. The range on a given day depends on what has reached town, so a seasonal bouquet gives the florist the most room to do well.
